The Spoiled Yak

89. The Spoiled Yak – Minari

Anisa and friends of the podcast refresh and Yunah talk about writer-director Lee Isaac Chung’s film Minari, starring Steven Yeun, Yoon Yeo-jung, and Han Yeri, as well as the precocious, adorable Alan S. Kim. We all loved the movie, and had a great discussion about the universality of its embodiment of the Korean American experience in the United States, how it captures vivid moments and emotions, and whether we have awards hopes for this film, even though awards don’t matter. But let’s be real, there’s no way we aren’t celebrating Minari’s six Oscar nominations!

  1. Listened to the whole thing and now I’m *THIS* close to giving up on waiting for a nice and legal source to watch this movie from in my country. Grrr. Gimme the movie!

P.S. The discussion was awesome you guys! I knew the beats of the movie already and this chat made me feel all the feels even before actually experiencing the story myself. I can’t wait to relisten after Minari’s released here. ❤️

  2. This was such a wonderful conversation – I wish it has been twice as long! Though I am not Korean or Korean-American, to me Minari was a profoundly American story. I’ve long been a fan of Han Ye-ri, and like you I’m a bit disappointed that she hasn’t gotten as much attention as her co-stars (who are also fantastic). The cast chemistry as a whole is incredible – they are a unit and yet each distinctly their own person (even Anne, who doesn’t get as much focus). I also appreciated the subtlety of the film and the fragile dance of hope and vulnerability that winds throughout.

It’s corny to say this, since they are fictional characters, but at the end of the movie I had an overwhelming sense of pride in being this family’s fellow American.
